UEFA Using Blockchain To Sell Tickets

Lately, we were writing about using blockchain technology not only as a support for cryptocurrencies but also as a solution in other industries. Today, UEFA presents an example of blockchain implementation in sport and entertainment industry.

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has announced in a press release about its success. The Union has implemented a new ticketing system via mobile phones based on blockchain technology.

First work on this kind of solution referred to only 50% of the tickets available for the 2018 UEFA Europa League final in Lyon in May. After success in May, UEFA has started work on increasing the function of blockchain ticketing system “to all of the general public” in Estonia.

Three months of work definitely pay off, because 100% of tickets for the UEFA Super Cup soccer match between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid held in Tallinn, Estonia on August 15 were sold via blockchain ticketing system. The system is available for iOS and Android as a blockchain-based application. UEFA also provided a video in which there is explained how to use mobile tickets.

UEFA also announced that this is not the end of work on improving the application and system itself. The main task, as you can read in the statement is:

[…] to make its ticket sales process for matches more simple and safe — thanks to a new system aimed at providing secure ticket distribution, and which prevents the replication and duplication of tickets.

As blockchain technology is entering the sports world, CoinDeal – cryptocurrency exchange platform has just celebrated the first game of the Wolverhampton Wanderers, the football team. CoinDeal is an official global partner of this English Club.
