An auction of BTC

The US Marshals Service has published a press release in which it is announcing an unusual auction.

The subject of the auction is the most popular cryptocurrency – Bitcoin.

An auction only for “the richer”

Exactly 2,170 Bitcoins will be put up for an auction. Bitcoins, that were seized as a result of federal crime, civil and administrative cases.
The sale will occur on March 19, 2018 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. EDT. Bidders who want to participate in an auction must register by noon EDT March 14 with a $200,000 deposit.

The sale will only be conducted online. There will be 14 packages offered: 2 packages of 500 BTC, 11 packages of 100 BTC and 1 package with 70 BTC. The offers should be sent by email and will be accepted only from pre-registered bidders. The winners will be notified privately after the auction.

The entire preparation and conduct of the auction are aimed at maintaining the relative anonymity of the bidders and buyers.

Where are Bitcoins from?

The list of cases from which the Bitcoins were seized is recorded in an official notice posted on the US Marshals Service site. Among the cases recorded is that of Shaun Bridges, the Secret Service agent who was indicted for stealing $800,000 in Bitcoins in 2015.
